Slovenia’s train network will get you to most of the destinations within the country.

The national railway company of Austria is known as the Slovenske železnice (SŽ). Slovenia has over 1,200 km of railway network. Train tickets for trains operating in Slovenia can be booked in advance. International trains connect Slovenia with neighbouring countries such as Austria and Croatia. Book tickets to visit main cities of Slovenia by train. Slovenian cities including Ljubljana, Bled and Maribor are all served by trains.

The picturesque capital Ljubljana is Slovenia’s only city, so enjoy the eclectically influenced capital while you’re there. After admiring the beautiful architecture and the young trendy inhabitants, take the Slovenia Railjet train service to Maribor, the largest town. Here you’ll find the oldest vine in the world and plenty of shops and markets, as well as a beautiful waterfront.

Slovenia is only small, making it easy to accomplish a lot in your time there. Ski down snow-capped Alpine mountains and swim in the turquoise Adriatic on the same day. Slovenia’s modern and efficient train system gets you around the city easily.

Take Home

Visit the tourist area of Postojna and the UNESCO site Škocjan to experience the caves and go crazy in the gift shop with trinkets and souvenirs. Otherwise the best shopping is in the capital, just over an hour away on the train from both sites.

Food & Drink

Slovenian food is heavy, meaty and plain. For something unique to the area try Kraški pršut, which is like Italian prosciutto, or štruklji, dumplings prepared in 70 different ways stuffed with sweet fillings, meat or vegetables. Try the Adam Ravbar beer, in Domžale, 1/2 hour on the local train from Ljubljana.

New Perspective

Get the adrenaline pumping with adventures in Posocje and Triglav National Park, where you can try canyoning, rafting and paragliding.

"It was an excellent trip. I was on holiday with my family. We were so happy that we opted for train journey from Zurich to Milan instead of taking a flight. We look forward to another trip again in near future. "

"It was nice to travel in Rail Euro. The only area where it needs improvement is cleanliness. I was surprised to see, news papers and plastics under the seat, thrown by people. Rest all things are fine. This, is really a good option for the people to travel in Europe. "

Let the train take the strain! |
"An excellent way to make the journey from Porto to Lisbon. The Metro connections from the main line stations made travel to and from our city destinations simple. We went to the main line station on the day before we travelled to reserve our seats (at no extra cost) and travelled tourist class. The journey took just over 2 and a half hours, and cost around £25 per head. Our tickets were booked on Rail Europe and were received well in advance of our trip. "

Good way to arrive in Venice |
"I travelled from Milan to Venice by train. The train was comfortable but a few things for others to note. There are two stations for Venice and only one in the centre and it is not clear how you connect between the two stations. The tickets had no flexibility and so we had to pay for another ticket when our plans changed. "

    Trains are great |
"On the Regional trains don't bother to book first class. We had trouble finding the first class carriage and in fact it was no different to the second class carriages. "

Cross border travel on Eurail |
"Great value and convenient as we did not have to change trains. But the lack of luggage racks meant that our rather large bags had to sit between our legs for 4 hours. "
