Overview

Pack your camping gear for a one-to-one encounter with the midnight sun in Sweden’s mountainous north.

The national railway company of Sweden is known as SJ. Sweden has over 13,000 km of railway network. Train tickets for trains operating in Sweden can be booked in advance. International trains connect Sweden with neighbouring countries such as Denmark and Norway. Book tickets to visit main cities of Sweden by train. Swedish cities including Malmo, Stockholm and Goteborg are all served by trains.

Cityscape

After visiting the Old Town and the Royal Castle in Stockholm, head south-west to Gothenburg. See romantic Masthugget Church, neo-classical Götaplatsen Square or stroll along sprawling Kungsportsavenyn. For the latest and most exciting contemporary architecture, travel south to up-and-coming Malmö.

Landscape

Trek through the vast wilderness of the north in Abisko Natural Park, or in the winter, watch the northern lights and go downhill skiing at Riksgränsen. Try island-hopping in the scenic archipelagos outside Stockholm or Gothenburg or stretch out on a long sandy beach in the southern province of Skåne. Don’t miss the limestone formations on the scenic island of Fårö, off the northern tip of Gotland.

Take Home

Carefully wrap up some Swedish glass from Småland to take home, together with some minimalist interior designs from Stockholm. Bring back bracelets and jumpers crafted by the Sami people of the north, or pickled herring from the west coast.

Eat & Drink

Try reindeer casserole - renskav - in the northern province of Norrland or smoked eel in southern Skåne. On the west coast, indulge in seafood specialities such as gravlax. All over the country, try traditional everyday Swedish meals such as pytt i panna (cubed potato and beef) or raggmunk (potato pancake) with lingonberry jam.

New Perspective

Enter Sweden from the south and sense the multicultural vibe of Malmö. Hang out in the new Västra Hamnen neighbourhood and see the sun set behind Öresundsbron, the bridge joining Sweden with Denmark.

  • Angels exist in the DB |
"My wife and i were travelling to Basel from Frankfurt. Our ticket number to print tickets would not work and DB counter staff and Frankfurt HbHf information were most unhelpful after prolonged queueing. Now we were late and had to buy another set of tickets oterwise we would miss the train. We then met two elderly gentlemen in red DB uniforms who helped us to print our original tickets and get a refund on the second set. On board on time thanks to two angels who gave us their patience and time. "

"I made a reservation for a trip from Nuremberg to Kaiserslautern recently to visit our son, after taking a cruise. When we got to the train station, I tried to print the tickets I had paid for online. The online Rail Europe site had made it sound as though we would have no problem doing that, but at the train station, we had numerous people trying to help us, only to find out that we could only print DB tickets, not Rail Europe tickets. They directed us to an Internet cafe, where nobody spoke English, and the Rail Europe site we managed to get to didn't have an option to print tickets already reserved, only new reservations. We finally just threw away the money we'd paid for the tickets, and made new reservations at a much higher rate, because our son was meeting us, so we had to be on those particular trains. We couldn't afford to waste any more time trying to use the tickets we'd already paid for. We spent a lot of money and a lot of time, and will never use Rail Europe again. "

"My first train trip in Sweden, from Stockholm to Gothenburg, was comfortable, clean, and quiet. With a table, charging sockets, and a large window the travel was very enjoyable. "
